Grammar Checkers – Can You Really Trust Them?

Every writer knows that correct spelling and grammar is a must. In order to write a coherent story, article or add that makes sense they must have a command of their native language, sometimes other languages also! As everyone makes mistakes here and there, it makes perfect sense that one would want to check their work while they write or after they are finished writing. This is where one would want to use a spelling or Grammar Check program.
However, are spelling and grammar checkers always correct? Surprisingly, experience shows that they are not all of the time! This comes about when one is writing either slang or spoken English. We all know that when writing slang words, they are not always in the English dictionary, therefore when spell check comes across it is marked wrong even though the slang is spelled correctly! In this case, you can add the slang to the dictionary within the program.
The same holds true if one is writing spoken English, spoken English is not always spoken correctly. Even though the writer may write it correctly, chances are that the spell or grammar checker is going to mark it incorrect. This can be frustrating to a writer sometimes.
What is one to do about this? The only thing that anyone can do is to use common sense when doing a spell or Grammar Check; look at what it is that the program wants you to change. If it makes no sense or is not proper English then skip over the change and move onto the next. One just needs to remember that their spell and Grammar Check software is only as good as the person using it. Just as humans, software and computers are not perfect either! This is why if one is going to write there needs to be a certain level of the language command left to the writer.
